Can You Forgive Her?

Can You Forgive Her? is playing at the Vineyard Theatre located at 108 East 15th Street. It runs one hour and forty five minutes with no intermission. The play closes on June 11, 2017.

Gina Gionfriddo is the playwright. Her plays Blister, Burn (2013) and Becky Shaw (2009) and were finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. She has written for the television series Law & Order.

Frank Wood won a Tony Award for Sideman in 1999.

Amber Tamblyn was nominated for a Primetime Emmy in 2004 for Joan of Arcadia.

The time is the present day, Halloween night in a New Jersey beach town.

Graham (Darren Pettie) opens the door to a milk maiden. Tanya (Ella Dershowitz) has something to say to him, she is reading off a piece paper. He pulls the paper from her hand and tells her to tell him directly what she wants to say.

His mother just died and he is in the home they used to live in. Tanya has dealt with her issues and tells him she will help him with his. Graham fathered divorced his mother and gave her everything. She supported them by being a nurse. A night she would write. There are boxes and boxes with labels on them. Some of the boxes say novels and journals. He is reluctant to read them. Tanya sets up a plan on how he can deal with the boxes and fix up the house at the same time. Graham has not worked in six months. Tanya works in a bar,

They leave together. The next scene Graham is coming into his living room with Miranda (Amber Tambyn). It seems the person she was with at the bar Sateesh (Eshan Bay) threaten to kill her with a knife. Tanya asks Graham to take her to his home till things calms down.

Miranda tells him about her life. She is in big debt. Sateesh buys her luxury things she cannot afford. However she has a lover David (Frank Wood) who pays to have sex with her. She claims she is not a prostitute. Miranda has come to town because David is meeting another women and she wants to see what she looks like. Graham not only hears her life story but she has ideas on how he can deal with all the boxes.

When Tanya arrives from work she offers Miranda advice on how she can straighten out her life.

They call David to come get her.

David tells us his life story.

Sateesh shows up.

Well I’m not telling how it ends or more details on each one’s life. You will just have to see the play.

It was a delightful, well-acted play. The only thing I wish was it was a little shorter during Graham and Miranda’s life history. But it is still worth seeing.

Allen Moyer did a great job with the set.
