Feeding The Dragon

Feeding The Dragon is playing at the Chery Lane Theatre located at 38 Commerce Street. It runs one hour forty minutes with no intermission. The play closes on April 27, 2018.

The play was written and performed by Sharon Washington.

Sharon tells us about her life when she lived with her parents and grandmother. They lived on the top floor inside St. Agnes Branch of the New York Public Library on the upper West Side. It was a big apartment with three bedrooms, living room and eat in kitchen. Her father was the building custodian.

Feeding The Dragon as her father called it was putting coal into the furnace to keep the building warm.

Sharon was going to public school when she got accepted in a private school, Dalton on a scholarship. The school was on the Upper East Side.

Her greatest thrill was when the library was closed she could read any book she wanted in any section including ones she shouldn’t have (books on sex).

She idolized her father but her world fell apart when he went off the wagon and was drunk. Sharon was sent to live with her aunt and uncle in Queens for three weeks. When her father was sober again they went to North Carolina to stay with his family. She got to meet her father’s family.

I’m not spoiling things about her family or the things she tells us. It’s something you have to find out yourself. But I will tell you it is a touching story of a young girl who grew up to be a remarkable writer and actress. Sharon goes from one person to another using different voices and movements. She was awe-inspiring!

It was a nice set. On the back wall were four windows in squares. Different colors came thru for different scenes. There were three steps across the stage with books under them. A stool was on the left side with a pile of books. Sharon would read something from the books from time to time.

Thank You for telling us your story. Hopefully next time we can see it off Broadway.
