Tootsie

Tootsie is playing at the Marquis Theatre located at 210 West 46th Street. It runs two hours thirty five minutes with one intermission. The play is opened ended.

The musical is based on the 1982 film of the same name. The musical made a world premiere tryout at the Cadillac Place Theatre in Chicago on September 2018. Tootsie was nominated for eleven 2019 Tony nominations for Best Score and music (David Yazbek), Best Book (Robert Horn), Best Choreography (Denis Jones), Best Actor (Santino Fontana)Best Featured Actor (Andy Grotelueschen), Featured Actress (Lilli Cooper) and (Sarah Stiles), Best Director (Scott Ellis), Best Costumes (William Ivey Long), Best Musical.

David Yazbek wrote the book and lyrics. He was nominated for five Tony Awards for Tootsie (2019), The Band's Visit (2018), Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (2011), Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (2005) and The Full Monty (2001).

Scott Ellis is the director. He has been nominated for eight Tony Awards for Tootsie (2019), She Loves Me (2015), The Mystery of Edwin Drood (2013), Curtains (2007), Twelve Angry Men (2005), Revival 1776 (1998), Steel Pier (1997), and revival of She Loves Me (1994).

Denise Jones is the choreographer. He was nominated for a Tony Award for Honeymoon in Vegas (2015).

David Rockewll is the scenic designer. He won a Tony Award for She Loves Me (2016) and was nominated for five Tony Awards for On the 20th Century, You Can’t Take It With You, Kinky Boots, Lucky Guy and Hairspray.

William Ivey Long is the costume designer. He was nominated for fifteen Tony Awards and won nine for Cinderella (2013), Grey Gardens (2006), Hairspray (2002), The Producers (2001), Crazy for You (1992), and Nine (1982).

Santino Fontana won a Tony Award for Tootsie (2019) and was nominated for a Tony Award for Cinderella (2013).

Lilli Cooper was nominated for a Tony Award for Tootsie (2019).

Sarah Stiles was nominated for two Tony Awards for Tootsie (2019) and Hand to God (2010).

Andy Groteluesehen was nominated for a Tony Award for Tootsie (2019).

Michael McGrath won a Tony Award for Nice Work If You Can Get It (2012) and was nominated for Tony Award for Spamalot (2005).

The setting is New York, present day.

Michael Dorsey (Santino Fontana) is an actor in a show. When he questions the director’s direction he’s fired. Michael is constantly getting fired because of it. His agent Stan Fields (Michael McGrath) even fires him.

He ends up working where his roommate Jeff Slater (Andy Grotelueschen) works at a restaurant.

Michael’s girlfriend Sandy Lester (Sarah Stiles) comes over to his apartment. She is auditioning for a play called Juliet’s Nurse. Sandy performs in front of him and asks his advice on how she did.

She doesn’t get the job. Dorothy Michaels (Santino Fontana) auditions for the role. She makes comments on the direction. She’s about to get dismissed when the producer Rita Marshall (Paula Leggett Chase) tells the director Ron Carlisle (Reg Rogers) to hire her.

Well Dorothy is Michael and no one except his roommate knows it.

Juliet's nurse is played by Julie Nicholas (Lilli Cooper). Michael plays the nurse. They become friends. At one point Julie kisses Dorothy on the check she responds by kissing her on the lips. Michael is in love with her. She freaks out and won’t talk to him. In the meantime another actor in the show Max Van Horn (John Behlmann) is in love with Dorothy and woo’s her.

What happen’s, you will have to see this delightful musical. This is a must see show for 2019.

Congratulations to Santino Fontana on his Tony Award. He was amazing. Lilli Cooper, Sarah Stiles, Andy Grotelueschen and Reg Rogers were outstanding.

The set by David Rockwell and costumes by William Levy Long were awesome.
