God Said This

God Said This is playing at the Cherry Lane Theatre located at 38 Commerce Street. It runs one hour forty minutes with no intermission. The play closes on February 15, 2019.

The place is Kentucky.

Jim (Jay Patterson) introduces himself and says I am an alcoholic. We find out later is goes to AA meetings regularly. That’s where we learn about him.

The main story is about his wife Masako (Ako) who is in the hospital. She is being treatment for cancer. It’s uncertain whether she will get through it.

Jim and Masako two daughters taking turn’s staying with her. Hiro (Satomi Blair) left home and lives in New York City. She is single and has a well-paying job. Sophie (Emma Kikue) is married and a born again Christian.

Hiro wants nothing to do with her father, when he comes into the room she leaves. She has gotten in touch with a high school friend John (Tom Coiner). He has been driving her around. Having fun like doing pot (which she found at her parents’ house). John has his issues like raising a 13 year old son.

As the play goes on we learn more about characters.

The bottom line is this was very dysfunctional family. There was no warmth or affection between the parents. Each parent was in their own world until the mother got sick.

The set was nice. The cast was outstanding.

However the characters fell flat. I left not having any feelings whatsoever for any of them.

The most interesting part was the last ten minutes when we find out how the parents met. That give a little light as to why things were the way they were.
