Disgraced

Disgraced is playing at the Lyceum Theatre located 149 West 45th Street. It runs one hour and thirty minutes with no intermission. The play closes on January 4, 2015.

The play made its debut off Broadway at the LCT3 Lincoln Center Theatre on October 22, 2012. It premiered in London on May 22, 2013.

Ayad Akhtar is the playwright. He won a Pulitzer Prize in 2013 for “Disgrace”. The play won an Obie Award in 2013.

Gretchen Mol is known her role in “Boardwalk Empire”.

Josh Radnor played Ted Mosley in the television show “How I Met Your Mother” for nine seasons.

The play takes place in an apartment in New York’s Upper East Side, 2011-2012.

Amir (Hari Dhillon) is an American born Muslim. He was raised in Manhattan and is an acquisitions lawyer. His wife Emily (Gretchen Mol) is Caucasian. She is an artist. Her themes have an Islamic theme.

Amir nephew Abe (Danny Ashor) has changed his name. Abe asks Amir if he can represent a local iaman who is accused of financing terrorist groups. Amir refuses. He has renounced his muslin faith. He is afraid of what might happen to him and his career if he did. Emily talks him into go to the court to observe the proceedings. The New York Times reports that he representing the man and the firm he works for.

Amir’s colleague from work Jory (Karen Pittman) and her husband Isaac (Josh Radnor) are coming over to Amir and Emily apartment to celebrate Emily show. Isaac is her art dealer.

Things come to light and accusations are made. Some have to with Jory being African American and Isaac being Jewish. Lives change.

Abe comes back with a whole new attitude about being a Muslim.

This is an excellent play, but I don’t know if everyone will like given the subject the subject matter (given the times). If you have an open mind, the show will make you think.

The actors all do an excellent job. They work well together.
