Fish In The Dark

Fish In The Dark is playing at the Cort Theatre located at 138 West 48th Street. It runs two hours and fifteen minutes with one intermission. The show closes on July 18, 2015.

Larry David is the playwright. He was co-creator of Seinfeld from 1989-1996. Larry won an Emmy Award in 1993 for this show.

Todd Rosenthal is the scenic designer. He won a Tony Award in 2008 and a Laurence Olivier Award for August: Osage County.

Ann Roth is the costume designer. She won an Academy Award for the English Patient. Ann won a Tony Award for the Nance (2013) and was nominated for four Tony Awards for The Book of Mormons (2011), The House of Blue Leaves (1986), The Crucifer of Blood (1979) and Slow Dance on the Killing Ground (1965).

Anne Shapiro won a Tony Award Drama Desk Award and an Outer Circle Critics Award in 2008 for August: Osage County.

Jason Alexander won a Tony Award in 1989 for Jerome Robbins Broadway. He is known for playing George Costanza in Seinfeld from 1989-1998.

Glenne Headly was nominated for two Emmy Awards for Bastard Out of the Carolina (1996) and Lonesome Dove (1989).

Jane Houdyshell was nominated for a Tony Award in 2011 for the revival of Follies.

The time is now, the place is California.

When the play opens the curtain is a window looking out.

The phone rings and Norman Drexel (Jason Alexander) says to his wife Brenda (Glenne Headly) I know someone has died, I know it. Why would someone call so early in the morning? It’s his brother Arthur (Ben Shenkman). He tells him their father is in the hospital and may not make it. But he doesn’t have to come to the hospital until the morning.

At the hospital are Norman, Brenda, Arthur and Arthur girlfriend Michelle (Jenn Lyon). Joining them is Brenda’s sister Rose Kanter (Mary Louis Burke), her husband Harry (Kenneth Tigar). Another Brother Stewie Drexel (Lewis J. Stadlen) is screaming that he should go into the room first. However Rose and Harry go in first. When they come out Harry tells them that Sidney (Jerry Adler) said he willed him his Rolex. Stewie insists the watch was promised to him.

Meanwhile Norman’s mother Gloria (Jayne Houdyshell) arrives and goes directly into the room.

Norman’s daughter Natalie (Molly Ranson) arrives in character for a role she is trying out for. She has an English accent. Accompanying her is her boyfriend Greg Johnny Orsini).

They all go into the room. Sydney informs his sons that he doesn’t want their mother to live alone. He tells them who he wants? He dies, each son claims the other is the name their father said she should live with.
 Norman’s wife tells him if his mother lives with them, she will leave him.

After the service Norman’s Housekeeper Fabiana Melendez (Rosie Perez) tells him a secret. While she was working for his parents, she had an affair with his father. Her son Diego (Jake Cannavale) is his brother. His father was giving her $30,000.00 a year. She needs that money and more to send her son to college.

What happens to the family, you’ll have to see this hilarious play.

This is a well-acted show. Jason Alexander and Ben Shenkman do a wonderful job.

The scenic design is well done.
