Heathers The Musical

Heathers the Musical is playing at the New World Stage located at 240 West 50th Street. It runs two hours and fifteen minutes with one intermission. This is an open ended show.

The show is based on the 1989 film written by Daniel Water’s. There was a reading in 2010. In September 13 and 14 it was presented at Joe’s Pub. It played at the Los Angele’s Hudson Backstage from September 21, 2013 thru October 6, 2013.

The musical was nominated for two 2014 Drama Desk Awards, Barrett Wilbert Weed, outstanding actor and Lawrence O’ Keefe and Kevin Murphy for outstanding musical. It was also nominated for a Lucile Lortel Award for Marguerite Derricks for Choreographer.

Veronica Sawyer (Charissa Hogeland) is in her senior year at high school. Her only friend is Martha Dunnstock (Katie Ladner). Veronica is the class brain; Martha is overweight. Both are picked on by fellow classmates.

The in girls are "The Heathers". Heather Chandler (Jessica Keenan Wynn) is the leader. The rest of the group are Heather McNamara (Ellen McLemore) and Heather Duke (Kristolyn Llyod). If you are not a friend, you are nothing to them.

Veronica joins the group. She is out of place with these hollow, cruel girls. There is a new boy in school Jason “J. D.” Dean (David Thomas Brown). He is able to stand up to the bullies. Veronica falls for him.

Events happen which are not funny. These are things that are happening in schools today.

The audience laughed. Maybe I don’t have a sense of humor. This one show, that would have been better as a drama.

Two outstanding cast members were Dave Thomas Brown) and Katie Ladner.
