That's your opinion Here's Mine

Hughie is playing at the Booth Theatre located at 222 West 45th Street. It runs one hour ten minutes with no intermission. The play is closing on June 12, 2016.

Hughie was written by Eugene O’Neill in 1942.

The first production was in 1964. It starred Jason Robards as Erie. He received a Tony Award nomination for the role. In 1975 Ben Gazzara played Erie and was nominated for a Tony Award for the role. Al Pacino directed and starred in the show in 1996.

Michael Grandage is the director. He won a Tony Award, Drama Desk Award and Laurence Olivier Award for Caligula in 2004. He was nominated for a Tony Award for The Cripple of Inishman (2014), Drama Desk Award for Hamlet (2010) and a Tony Award and Drama Desk Award for Nixon/Frost (2007).

Forest Whitaker won an Academy Award in 2006 for The Last King of Scotland.

Frank Wood won a Tony Award in 1999 for Side Man.

The play takes place in the early hours of the morning of summer, 1928.

The place is a second rated hotel lobby. The night clerk (Frank Wood) is starring out in space. Erie Smith (Forest Whittaker) comes in and requests his keys.

Erie starts up a conversion with the night clerk. He tells him stories about the last night clerk who has just died. It seems they were good friend’s, he even was invited to his house.

We find out Eris is a gambler. He said he is down on his luck since Hughie has died. The night clerks gamblers and Erie is in heaven.

The show is Forest Whitaker. Frank Wood comes alive at the end.

Frank Wood is on the stage before the play begins looking into space. This was done in another show Michael Grandage directed called “Red”.

I felt nothing for either characters. I could not warm up to either one of them. The show was too bland for me!
