It Shoulda Been You

It Shoulda Been You is playing at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre located at 256 West 47th Street. The play runs one hour forty five minutes with no intermission. It is an opened show.

David Hyde Pierce is making his Broadway debut as a director. He won a Tony Award for “Curtains” (2008) and was nominated for a Tony Award for “Vanya & Sonia and Mash and Spike” (2013). David won four Emmy Awards for the television show “Frasier” in 1995, 1998-1999 and 2004.

The musical premiere at the George Street Musical in New Brunswick, New Jersey from October 6, 2011 to November 6, 2011.

Brian Hargrove wrote the book and lyrics. He is married to David Hyde Pierce.

Anne Louizos is the scenic designer. She was nominated for three Tony Awards for “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” (2013), “In the Heights” (2008) and “High Fidelity” (2007).

William Ivey Long is the costume designer. He has been nominated four fourteen Tony awards and won six. William won for “Cinderella” (2013),” “Grey Gardens” (2007), “Nine” (2003), “Hairspray” (2002), “The Producers” (2001) and “Crazy for You” (1992).

Tyne Daly made her Broadway debut in 1967 in ”That Summer-That Fall”. She won a Tony Award for “Gypsy” (1990) and was nominated for two Tony Awards for “Mothers and Sons” (2014) and “Rabbit Hole” (2006). Tyne has won two Prime Time Emmy's for “Judging Amy” (2005) and “Christy” (1995).

Harriet Sansom Harris won a Tony Award for “Thoroughly Modern Millie” (2002). She is known for television role in “Frasier” (Bebe Glazer) and “Desperate Housewives” (Felicia Tilman).

Sierra Boggess was nominated for a Drama Desk Award and Drama League Award in 2008 for “The Little Mermaid”.

David Burtka made his Broadway debut in 2003 in “Gypsy. He is also a chef.

Montego Glover was nominated for a Tony Award for “Memphis” (2010). She made her Broadway debut in “The Color Purple” (2006).

Josh Grisetti was nominated for a Drama Desk Award and a Drama League Award for “Enter Laughing” (2009).

Jenny Steinberg (Lisa Howard) is singing today is my day I’m 32 ish and Jewish. You think it’s her wedding day but it is her sister Rebeca (Sierra Bogges) who is getting married. Jenny helped put the wedding together. Rebecca fiancé Brian Howard (David Burtka) keeps popping in.

They are holding the wedding in a plush hotel.

Both parents are there. Rebecca’s mother Judy (Tyne Daly) is the typical stereotype Jewish mother pushy, bossy, domineering etc. Her father Murray (Chip Zion) stays out of the picture and lets her handle everything. Brian parents are the opposite. His mother Georgette (Harriet Harris) has a drinking problem. She wants to keep her son close to her doing different thing to keep him from liking girls like giving him dolls to play with, what harm is Barbie and Ken. His father George (Michael X. Martin) tries to get close by hugging him. He tells him unless he has Rebecca sign a prenuptial agreement, he will cut him out of his will.

The wedding planner Albert (Edward Hibbert) seems to know everything and more than is happening with the wedding and how to resolve it. Well he does get help from the staff Mimsy (Anne L. Nathan) and Walt (Adam Heller).

Murray’s sister Sheila (Anne L. Nathan) seems to on the prowl. His brother Morty (Adam Heller) can’t remember things. That is the part brides side of the family that we see. We don’t see the grooms.

Jenny speed dials Rebecca’s old boyfriend Marty Kaufman (Josh Grisetti) by mistake. When he finds out that she is getting married he rushes to the hotel. Her parents would rather she marry Marty, he’s Jewish.

The story revolves around what happens before and after the ceremony.

There is a twist which I won’t tell you least it will spoil the show. I knew it was there but it wasn’t what I thought it was.

This is a delightful, wonderful, entertaining show. The set and costumes are great.

Lisa Howard voice is powerful. You feel for her and wish you could hook her with the right guy.

Anne L. Nathan and Adam Heller play two different characters They are so good you don’t realize it’s the same actor you saw as a different person.

Tyne Daly and Harriet Harris are the mothers you like to say thank goodness their not mine. They both do a stellar job.

The rest of the cast holds their own and do an impressive job.

I hope we get to see more of David Hyde Pierce directing. He got the best from all of the actors.

This is a must see show.
