Straight

Straight is playing at The Acorn Theatre located at 410 West 42nd street. It runs ninety minutes with no intermission. The play closes on May 8, 2016.

Michael McDonald is the costume designer. He was nominated for a Tony Award and Drama Desk Award in 2009 for the revival of Hair.

The place is Ben’s apartment in Boston, the time is the present.

Ben (Jake Epstein) and Chris (Thomas E. Sullivan) are watching a game on the television, drinking beer. Ben is 25 and Chris is 20. They have just become friends.

As the months that go by their friendship become something else. One problem Ben has a girlfriend. Emily (Jenna Gavigan) is a graduate student in cancer research. Ben and Emily are intimate too. They travel, go to family events as a couple.

Emily’s roommate decides move out their apartment three month before their lease is to run out. She asks Ben since his lease is about to expire why doesn’t he move in with her.

Ben not sure what to do? He loves his relationship with Ben and with Emily. Emily knows nothing about Ben’s other life.

Though people’s sexual preference is being accepted more in today’s society, Ben is not brave enough to come out.

The ending is heartbreaking, especially when you see the expression on Ben’s face.

If you want to know what happens to the characters, you will have to see the show. It is a touching story of love, hurt and deceit.

The set is great. It fun seeing how the cast uses the doors on the set to come and go. The scenic designer is Charlie Corcoran.
