Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Playing at the Booth Theatre located at 222 West 45th Street. It runs two hours forty minutes with two intermissions. The show runs until January 27, 2013.

This is the fifth anniversary of this play. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf opened on Broadway on October 13, 1962 at the Billy Rose Theatre. It starred Uta Hagen as Martha and Arthur Hill as George. The play won both the 1963 Tony Award for Best Play (Edward Albee) and the 1962-1963 New York Drama Desk, Critic Circle Award for Best Play. The play also was selected for the 1963 Pulitzer Prize for Best Drama but lost due to the controversial use of profanity and sexual themes. Arthur Hill and Uta Hagen won Tony Awards for their roles.

In March 12 2005 the revival played at the Longacre Theatre and ran until until September 4, 2005 for one hundred seventy seven performances and eight previews. Kathleen Turner played Martha and Bill Irwin as George. Bill Irwin won the 2005 Tony Award for best actor for his role.

Tony Letts won a Tony and Pulitzer Award for "August:Osage County in 2008".

Amy Morton was nominated for a Tony Award for playing Barbara in "August:Osage County".

The play takes place in the fall of 1962 in the living room in a house on the campus of a small New England college.

Martha (Amy Morton) and her husband George (Tracy Letts) are returning home after attending a party put on by her father . He is president of the college where George works .George is an associated professor in history.

Both having a drinking problem and continue when the get home. Martha informs George that they are having guests from the party, This is a surprise to George since it is 2 a. m. The couple Nick (Madison Dirks) and Honey (Carrie Coon) are coming. Nick is a teacher in the biology department. Honey and Nick join in the drinking when arrive.

George and Martha have been bickering and attacking each other verbally before Honey and Nick came. They still continue even more when their company is there. However now they are playing games. The games are called "Humiliate the Host", "Get the Guests", "Hump the Hostess" and "Bring up Baby".

No one is sparred. The drinking continues and gets worse and more vicious.

Why??? George and Martha are still married after twenty three years. It's a mystery maybe misery loves company. You wonder what is truth and what is not.

The cast works well together under the direction of Pam MacKinnon. She received a Tony and Lortel nomination and an Obie Award for "Claybourne Park" in 2012.

Carrie Coon and Madison Dirks do a great job making their Broadway debut.

Amy Morton and Tracy Letts are so convincing as the destructive couple. They do a solid job.

This is an interesting play even after fifty years. It makes you think and you might walk away with a different interpretation than the person you were with. Well unless you a psychiatrist.

If you can sit thru two hours and forty minutes and two intermissions for a total of three hours it is worth seeing.
